Women adult literacy centers
Education assumes prime importance for women of Pakistan as they are the most vulnerable and marginalized section of society. The combination of social taboos, religious values and gender-biased state policies in the past has virtually excluded this major section of population (52%) from mainstream development. Female education has never been on the priority lists of parents, society and the state. At present country have about 46 million adult illiterates, with female illiteracy ratio at 72% which is highest in south Asia.
In continuity of our adult literacy project since 2005, responding to the community demand WWHL launched the second phase of adult literacy program in 2007 with the financial support of global fund for women, USA. Under the project 10 basic literacy centers have been set up in the different industrial cities Punjab and NWFP. These literacy centers will cater the basic educational needs of over 600 women in one year. |
