To create awareness and challenge the discrimination against women and to mainstream women struggle into national/ international women & labor movements, it is very important to make women aware about their fundamental rights. Also for the purpose of advocacy/lobbing for proper implementation of labor laws it is very important to organize women workers & challenge unfair labor practices by exploitative forces. To achieve all these objectives the following activities are being undertaken.
World Women’s Day
When women on all continents, often divided by national boundaries and by ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic and political differences, come together to celebrate their Day, they have an opportunity to look back to a tradition that represents at least nine decades of struggle for equality, justice, peace and development. WWHL believes that celebrating 8 March as women day is to show solidarity to women movements around the world on one hand and also providing local women opportunity to raise their issues related to basic Fundamental Rights.
Campaign against Violence Against Women
To link the women struggle with international movements aimed at efforts to eliminate the violence against women study circles, seminar, demonstration, public hearing and meetings are being organized to highlight, address the different forms and manifestations of violence against women. Meetings with relevant government departments are also being arranged to share the women issues, policy implementation and better legislation for women rights in the country.
Organization of female youth/awareness raising to address social issues
More than 60% of total population is youth, which is facing multiple issues. They are nowhere on any priority of government agenda. Young girls have specific social problems but there are no policies to address those issues at state level. There are rare opportunities for them to discuss and explore the new ways of thinking and venues in life. Study circles are being organized where young women are provided with the opportunity to discuss their social, economic and other issues. This would be helpful for them to discuss and challenge the derogatory customs of the society in an organized manner.
Counseling/Legal Help/ Referral networking for Legal Protection
Women are generally illiterate and in situations of conflict, violence, oppression or adverse circumstances, they do not know to challenge the situation asserting their legal rights. As a result they prefer to remain silent, compromise with the situation and accept it as their fate. WWHL has been creating legal rights awareness and also providing Legal Help to these violence victims (women) suffering with different forms of violence in the society, enabling them to fight for justice and fundamental rights. WWHL intends to continue legal awareness and support to such victims.
Adult Literacy Centers for women
Education is seen as a key to development and the ability of a country to keep up with the fast moving technological change. Progress and prosperity of a country, largely depends on the choices of education made available to its people. Indeed, education is one of the most powerful instruments of change. There are three Adult Literacy centers already working in Shahdara, Kot Lakhpat and Badami Bagh. WWHL is struggling to establish more centers to enhance the women status in the society.
Home Based Women Workers Union
With the introduction neo-liberal agenda and the process of privatization the phenomenon of Home Based work is on the rise. Women folk are increasingly engaged in this highly stressful activity, with low income and over burdened work. They are contributing substantially to national economy but they are recognized as workers. There are no laws to cover their labor rights or provide social security. WWHL has been demanding that the government should ratify relevant ILO conventions on home-based workers to provide women workers legal coverage, social security and health insurance. Meetings are being arranged to aware, mobilize and unionize HBWs, enabling them to asset their legal rights and raise their issues at National level.
Campaign to address sexual harassment at work places
Sexual harassment at workplace is a rampant phenomenon. Women usually feel unsafe at their work places due to socially-accepted male biased attitude. Many cases of sexual harassment go unreported and unaddressed. To address these issues and to provide a women friendly environment, a vigorous campaign has been initiated to mobilize the management of the units, factories to adopt the policy and code of conduct against sexual violence against women at work places. For the purpose media will also be engaged to sensitize the society at large.
Engagement with Women/Labor Department/ Trade Unions/Media
Under free market economy concept workers rights are being snatched rapidly and little is being done to secure whatever the workers’ rights left available to them. WWHL would make efforts for the implementation of labor laws. For this purpose meetings will be arranged to talk with labor and women departments to share the women and workers issues. The poor economic conditions, social issues and implications of women related laws are being shared with government and labor department representatives in order to muster their support. |
